Monologue Monday: Letters to My Younger Self #4

How was your Monday?

Mine was pretty good, but at the moment I’m HUNGRY!!!

I’ll take care of that in a second, but first, I just wanted to sit down and write this quick post.

I actually received a request to talk about the difference between gold-digging and security….bet you can guess who it came from: yep, a guy sent it in.

Either way, I think it’ll be a fun topic to discuss because I definitely think there’s a difference between the two.

But before I get to that topic, I wanted to write a quick note to my younger self. (Hopefully I’ll get to the post on security vs. gold-digging soon, but I’m trying to stop giving out dates because lately I haven’t been able to stick to them because work has been so busy. So in an effort to try to be a woman of my word, I’ll just say, “as soon as I get some free time, I’ll stop back by to give my opinion on the matter and I would love for you to do the same”).

In the meantime, here’s what I would tell my younger self today….

(And if you have no idea what this is all about, click here).

Letters To My Younger Self:

Things That I Wish I Knew About Waiting, Dating and Confidence

Dear Younger Self:

Let me just get straight to the point on this one:

It’s better to be honest and clear about your limits UP FRONT, than to be unclear about the matter when you know that you have boundaries that you don’t desire to go past.

You know that you don’t want to have sex before marriage, so don’t be vague about it.

Don’t worry whether you are going scare the guy off, whether everybody else is going to have something to say about it, or whether it’s kind of uncomfortable to talk about when you don’t know how the other person is going to respond.

All of that is irrelevant. This is your body we’re talking about and your life. What everyone else thinks, particularly in this case, really doesn’t matter much.

Not telling the guy that you are interested in or telling him but being unclear about it all, is not only misleading, but it could potentially cause a lot of unnecessary confusion and tension when you could’ve just be upfront about it from the beginning.

Besides, if you divulging this information is going to cause someone to walk away or be apprehensive, you should know his intentions before things get serious.

If he walks away or tries to convince you to do “everything else but sex” trust me when I say he’s not the one for YOU.

Leading someone on, sugar-coating things, or not being completely clear, is wrong. Being straightforward and direct about your boundaries really is the only way to go. Not only will you be saving yourself a lot of heartache by being truthful, but you can weed out the random guys who care more about their desires being fulfilled than they do about getting to know you as a person.

I’m not saying tell everybody, that’s dangerous… but if you’ve been getting to know someone and he has piqued your interest, if you think there could be a future there, be open with him and talk about it.

Wait for the one who will wait with you and not make you feel bad about it or question your decisions…

And don’t ever forget that you are WORTH waiting for Princess

Male’s Perspective Interview: “Troy”

I was reading on my floor yesterday when I got up to get some water, and literally almost passed out. That had never happened to me before, EVER, but it’s like as soon as I stood up everything just kind of went blank.

I immediately laid down, while trying not to freak out too much, because I had no idea what was going on. I thought maybe I just got up too fast and it would just go away, but it didn’t.
Every time I would get up my head would just spin like crazy, I was really light-headed, and I could only lay my head to one side- if I laid it to the other side it felt like I was on a rollercoaster and made me even more dizzy then if I just stuck to laying on the other side.
After about 3 hours of this, I realized that I should probably contact someone- even though I really just wanted to toughen it out and just see if it would go away- because it was hindering my ability to do any thing.
I got someone to carry me to the hospital- and the doctor told me that I had an inner ear infection which was also causing symptoms of vertigo. I got some meds and was told to rest.
That was yesterday.
Although I’m relieved that it wasn’t something even more serious, I don’t like feeling like this…period.
Whereas yesterday my head was spinning constantly- I was scared to even go the bathroom because I thought I might hit the floor- today it is only spinning whenever I get up or am sitting up for too long. I hope that means I’m getting better.
That said, I know that I’m supposed to be writing a letter to my younger self today, but that’s going to have to wait until later on (tonight hopefully). (I’m only telling you all of this because I like keeping my word, but this is something that may be beyond my control).
In the meantime, here’s an interview that I did a couple of days ago. It was one of few words, but I still think that the interview revealed a lot and showcased another male’s perspective; continuing to demonstrate that all guys are not the same.
Check it out and let me know what you think, and I think that on that note, I’m going to lay my head back down so that the room will stop spinning.
I hope ya’ll have a great week, and I’ll be back later on tonight if I’m feeling it. (I know I should probably rest but writing is therapeutic to me in so many ways). That said, if I don’t, I’ll talk to you when I can.
-Take care of your health….

Male’s Perspective Interview: “Troy”
1.   What would you say to the ladies out there who think that ‘all guys are just the same’?

I would tell her that all men are not the same. We all may have many of the same urges and the same issues but we each handle them differently. Some men are devoted and caring, and some aren’t. If all men were the same though, then how would you have couples, like my parents, making it 20+ years in marriage?

2.   Do you wish you would have waited? Why or why not?
I honestly do wish I would have wait because things probably would have turned out differently. I have learned that waiting allows you to get to know a person more fully.

3.    So do you see any benefits in waiting until marriage to have sex?
I think that the benefits of waiting until marriage are that it gives the couple a chance to fall in love with each other rather than falling for a person because of how they make you feel sexually. Sex can take over a person’s decision-making, and I’m just keeping it real with you from my personal experiences.

4.   What advice would you give to single ladies who want to be in a relationship, but haven’t met the right one yet?
Just be patient and don’t force it. I believe that there’s somebody out there for everyone. You just have to wait and allow God to handle it.

5.   What are your thoughts on living with someone before marrying them?
I would NOT recommend it. Speaking from experience, I knew before I did it that it was something that God didn’t approve of, but I did it any way and life got very difficult for me.

6.   What’s the nicest thing that a girl has ever done for you?
Making my mother smile is the nicest thing that a girl will ever do for me.

7.     Aww! That’s really sweet. So what’s your take on a girl trying to change the guy that she is with in order to fit her ideal man?
I really do not like it when a person attempts to change another person. If you like that person, like him for who he is, flaws and all.

8.    What qualities do you look for in a girlfriend?
I really don’t have set qualities that I look for in a girlfriend as long as she shares in my same faith. But I do look more for what’s in her heart and mind than in her looks and talents, which is something that I used to do in my past.

9.    Are first impressions really everything? What’s included in your first impressions?
Honestly, first impressions play a big part. You will always remember the first time you meet a person. But like I said in the last question, I try not to place too much emphasis on it because in time you will see the real person… the comfortable person.

10.   How can a girl know if a guy is in to her (for those of us who are oblivious sometimes J)?
In my opinion, one of the main ways to know if a guy is into you is how much time does he devote to you. I know a guy can be friends with a female and hang out with her every once in a while, but if he is really trying to spend time with you then there’s probably something there.

Or if he comes out of his comfort zone to do something for you, like go to church with you, then he’s probably into you... Lol nobody is really comfortable going to a new church with somebody but if he wants to impress you or just spend time with you, he’ll make it happen.

Monologue Monday: What Would You Tell Your Younger Self?

Lately I’ve been in a funk and have had no idea what to write about, even though I have really wanted to write and express myself.

So I took a little break, and in that time of relaxing and enjoying life, I questioned my motives and intentions with blogging….trying to remind myself why I started doing this in the first place.
While I admire those who can do 5-7 posts a week, work, AND maintain a life, I realized that isn’t for me. (Even though this week I'll probably end up doing close to that many because I miss ya’ll so much and have so many things that I want to talk about! But the point is, for normal daily living that doesn’t fit my lifestyle).
What works for me, and keeps me passionate about writing, is allowing things to be organic and natural, not calculated and planned. I like writing here a couple times of week, journaling daily, and then going out and making things happen…achieving the goals that I dream about, instead of just talking about them.
I realize that you are probably like ‘where is this all coming from’, or ‘who told you that you HAD to write daily’, but I’m saying all of this for a reason. (I’m just taking a bit longer than I probably should in getting to the point…my apologies).
At any rate, in my realizing that there are no rules to expressing myself or to using the creative outlet of writing to do so, I decided that what was missing from my posts, and was consequently making me feel blah about it all, was me. (Sorry if this is feeling like a therapy session…I really am getting to the point!).
So I decided that what if on the days when no one has shared a story, or a story is still being written/edited, that I just sort of bare it all (for a lack of a better phrase), and put myself out there.
That’s where this new series that I’m about to introduce will be of feature. I’m calling it:
“Letters to My Younger Self: Things That I Wish I Knew About Waiting, Dating, and Confidence”.
(And before I go any further, I just want to give credit where credit is due. This idea stemmed from one of my favorite bloggers, Sarah K, and a different idea came from a reader of this site, Marietta. They both did something similar and I just sort of fused the two together. Sarah writes letters to her younger, single self from time to time, and Marietta wrote a blog post here about ‘What She Wish Her Mother Would Have Told Her’. I think the combination of these two ideas is the perfect prescription for what I’m needing at the moment, so thanks ladies J).
Not only do I think this will be fun, therapeutic, insightful, and will remind me of how far I’ve come, but most importantly, hopefully it will help someone else along the way.
I still plan on doing feature stories of other women on some Monologue Mondays and the Male Perspective interviews from guys, (and will continue to do so indefinitely), and both of which you’ll be getting another post on soon, but in between those times I plan to just have some fun and do one of the things that I do best….writing while expressing myself J

-Hope you’ll stick along for the ride

Letters To My Younger Self:
Things That I Wish I Knew About Waiting, Dating and Confidence

P.S. Next Monday I’ll start this series and at least carry it out to the end of the year (maybe longer…I can think of a TON of things I would tell my younger self, so we’ll just play it by ear and see how it goes). In the meantime, what about you?!?!?!

What’s something that you would tell your younger self about waiting, dating, confidence, self-esteem, relationships, etc???

The Male’s Perspective: Mr. Congeniality (Part 2)

Many of you seemed to really enjoy the Male’s Perspective interview that I posted last week. Thanks so much for your emails and messages; the feedback was much appreciated and it gave me great ideas for subsequent interviews, so thanks again!

Today will be Part 2 of Mr. Congeniality’s interview. (If you are curious about how we choose this name, or want to check out the first part of the interview, click here).
Hope you all have a safe and pleasant weekend J
***P.S. If you have a question that you would like for me to ask in one of my upcoming interviews please feel free to leave a message below or email me. I love hearing from you! ****

The Male’s Perspective: Mr. Congeniality (Part 2)
6. Low self-esteem and low confidence seem to be prevalent issues affecting our generation. What do you think is the cause of this and how can it be combated?

I think it’s because of comparing oneself to others. I believe it is the most difficult for women though because of the extreme prevalence of the "perfect body/face/hair/clothes" in magazines, TV, movies and other sources of public media.

First off, those women you see on the billboards are being paid big bucks to maintain that appearance and they can dedicate entire days in the gym or hours upon hours in the salon. And, who says that is "perfection"?

Referencing question #5, girls with confidence and pride radiate a unique, non-descriptive type of attractiveness that quality guys love.

7. If a woman wanted to wait or practice abstinence, would you be willing to do so?

Yes, I would. And if you are in pursuit of a long-term relationship, a simple way to determine if he is “right for you” would be to tell him you want to wait. If he sticks around, you scored. If he leaves, you know he is not for you.

8.Some of the younger readers here have stated that they don’t know how to tell a guy no when propositioned about sex. What would be your advice for those individuals?

First off, please inform him as early as possible.

Basically, as soon as you realize he is interested in sex. (During the first coffee at Starbucks? Maybe not, but sooner rather than later.) If you wait until you and he are literally in a sexual situation, it will be most awkward for both of you and most emotionally, physically frustrating for the guy.

And specifically on how to tell him- be direct. Keep it simple. If you want to wait until marriage, "I want to wait until marriage before having sex.” If you want to wait until a later point in the relationship, "I am not ready for sex at this point in the relationship.” (A disclaimer for this statement: Because of how ambiguous this statement is, some guys may become frustrated if the "point in time" takes a long time to come. Maybe being more specific would help.)

9.What dating tips would you give to the guys reading this?

Be the best listener that you can be. If you place all of your attention on a girl when in conversation with her, you can give her the feeling that she is the only person in the world that you care about at that moment. It's a special feeling, as girls have told me. Also, don't forget what she says!

10.Is there anything else that you would like to add that I didn’t ask you?

Compromises are necessary in any relationship. However, when it comes to sex, it's your way or the highway for the guy.

3/2/13

The Male’s Perspective: Mr. Congeniality

You know that awkward moment where you have to contact a guy and ask him if he would be willing to do an interview with you and share his thoughts about relationships, turnoffs, confidence and women (on a site geared towards young adults and women), and hope that he doesn’t look at you with a side eye or question your aptitude?!?!?

Well maybe you don’t know, but it’s kind of terrifying. To be honest, every time that I have asked a guy to interview with me, even though I know that there’s a good purpose behind it all, I get really nervous.
I mean not only am I asking them really personal questions that they probably only talk about with their friends, (and on rare occasions maybe their acquaintances), but then I take it another step by placing that information on the internet (with their permission of course!).
I’m always so excited, and GRATEFUL, each time that one of them says yes because I could imagine that it could be slightly stressful being interviewed on your private thoughts about such personal topics (knowing that your answers could potentially be read by tons of people).
That said, I have been very fortunate to work with some really kindhearted, compassionate guys who believe in what I’m doing and are more than willing to offer their opinions on the various subject matters that are affecting both women and men in our generation.
So today I am going to introduce you to a guy who is one of the nicest southern gentlemen that I have ever met. (And I’m from the south so I have met my fair share, but this guy is towards the top of the list!)
When I called him up and told him about what I was doing and asked if he would be willing to be interviewed, he agreed without hesitation and was very real with his answers. (You know how sometimes you can tell if someone is just telling you what you want to hear??? Well there was none of that…he was just very down to earth and matter of fact about it all).
After finishing the interview I told him that his identity would remain anonymous, because I care more about sharing the different male perspectives and less about revealing their identities, so I told him I would just call him Mr. Congeniality. My brother laughed at this, but this guy is secure in his manhood and just said ‘if that works for you than I’m ok with it’….I think friendly and sociable describe him perfectly!
Here are his answers in his own words…. (P.S. I decided to turn this into a Part 2 so check back next week for the end).

The Male’s Perspective: Mr. Congeniality
1.     Why did you agree to be interviewed for this site? What are some things that you think that teens and young women can gain from hearing more of a variety of different males’ perspectives?

Because I trust and respect you and I know that your efforts are true, valuable, and full of love. Therefore, I chose to support your efforts.

Also, a large variety of male opinions and perspectives heard by teenage and young women will provide them with a more balanced view of men. In addition, if a young woman has a specific question or struggle in a relationship with a man, a larger pool of male interviews gives her the best chance of possibly receiving her specific answer.

2.       Why didn’t your last relationship work out?

Two reasons:
First, was because I was leaving the country to do some international development work for 27 months. I have over 12 months experience with long-distance (international) relationships and have learned that those types of relationships do not work for me. My past long-distance relationships eventually became strained and never regained their original strength.
Second (and possibly more important), our post-college paths were quickly heading in drastically different directions: she wanted to immediately begin a career in a field that she did not love for more money and security. I wanted to spend the next handful of years exploring cultures far different from what I knew, and to absolutely love earning a living.

3.     There are some great guys out there, why do you think some women have such a hard time getting into the relationship that’s right for her?

One thought that I have is that some women make initial choices based on trivial attributes. For example, beginning a serious relationship with a guy because he is handsome and fit, or he is really funny. (I believe a physical attraction is important, and who doesn't like a good laugh, but much, much more is needed for a healthy relationship.) If that guy turns out to be immoral, selfish, or overly prideful, a woman will run into trouble.

Solution: think long and hard (or imagine) about the best experiences you have had with a guy. What qualities made those experiences so wonderful? Was it his generous heart, his dedication etc...

Another idea: don't enter a relationship with overly-high expectations (we guys are full of problems, far from "the perfect guy"). Think simply, so that when we do something incredible, it will blow you away!

4.      What are a few behaviors that you observe some women doing in their relationship that probably turn a guy off?

·         Self-deprecation, "putting oneself down". I have witnessed dozens of women doing this before and during relationships. "Your middle toe is longer than your big toe, so what?!" It makes guys think women value small problems too much. Plus, there's a good chance the guy you are with would have never noticed your extra long toe.

·        Some guys TELL you how they feel. Some guys SHOW you how they feel. Please pay attention and notice how your guy shows his love/appreciation for you. If he doesn't say "I love you" everyday, think about how much time he spends on you before you become upset.

·        If you are truly mad at us, please tell us why. The silent treatment does not produce any fruit in the relationship. For the repairing and prevention of future problems, we need to know what went wrong.

5.       Is it ok for a girl to approach a guy?

Heck yeah! As a naturally shy guy, I find confident girls very attractive. Plus it helps jump start that first conversation.

****Check back next week for Part 2 ****

Male Week: An Athlete’s Perspective- My Youngest Brother (Part 2)

Today’s interview is the conclusion of my younger brother’s interview for the site and the last interview for 2012.

I don’t want to talk too much, but I was blown away by his answers. I mean I have always known that I have two AMAZING brothers, whom I love both to pieces by the way, but now I get to share that with the world.

To listen to him respond to all of my questions with as much patience and poise as he did really meant the world to me. He is an incredible person and I am honored to not just call him my brother, but to even know him as a person. (Sorry to be so sentimental but I really am grateful for the family that I have if you can’t tell!)

But don’t just take my word for it; here is Part 2 of his interview in his own words. Check it out and let me know what you think. (Oh, and you can read Part 1 here).
Part 2:
1.      So this is the second part of your interview. Why did you feel like it was necessary to do a Part 2? I feel like you never want to leave a stone unturned or to have your readers come back after reading something that you said and still have more questions than answers. I just wanted to answer any lingering questions and to finish what I started.

2.      Well, you have already done Part 1, so let’s just jump right into the tough questions shall we?!? Thanks for putting yourself out there and doing this by the way!... So I have been hearing young women comment that their guy isn’t treating them right. What would you say to the person who asks what can she do to make him treat her better? She can’t do anything but walk away… You can’t change people. A guy is going to treat you how you allow him to treat you. First impressions are everything, so if during those first impressions he felt like he could take it there with her and she gave him the impression that it was acceptable, then she shouldn’t be that surprised when it goes too far because she didn’t confront it when she was first presented with the situation. If someone is treating you bad from the beginning, don’t just accept it and wait for things to get worse. If he hit you once then it’s not that shocking if a combo or an uppercut comes after that.

So do you think that these types of guys prey on weak girls then? Yeah, I think that they prey on girls who have low self-esteem and who don’t know their worth. It’s like if you go to a pawn shop and sell something to them for $50 because you were impatient and wanted it sold now, and you thought that was going to be the best offer that you received. But then if you were to take that same item to an appraiser and they said it was worth $15,000, then you would have waited and not sold it for $50 because it was worth more than that. If you knew the worth and value of what you possessed then you wouldn’t have given it away for less than it was worth…. You have to know your worth. Whatever you think you are worth is what you are going to expect and accept.

3.      Since we are on the subject, why do you think some women suffer from low self-esteem? Do you think that the opposite sex has anything to do with it? Some women suffer from low self-esteem because they feel like they don’t measure up. This could come from allowing people to mistreat or speak negatively to them, to believing what other people say about them, or even comparing themselves to other women. Perception is reality so if they don’t feel like they fit that “perfect girl” image or that they measure up to the female whom they admire in the magazines or videos, then they begin to feel insecure about themselves.

Its self-esteem though, so you can always change that. It’s never too late to change your self-esteem because it’s your opinion of yourself; not others people opinion of you. If you don’t like yourself, how can you expect other people to like you? Learn to love yourself first.

4.       So what’s your favorite part about a woman? Confidence… a woman who knows who she is. She doesn’t feel threatened when her man is out of town and she doesn’t feel like she has to show her body all over social media sites to garner attention. She is secure in herself and doesn’t feel like she needs a man to complete her. I also like independence and want to have some level of attraction to her. She doesn’t have to be what others deem the most attractive or appealing, but as long as she believes that she is beautiful and she carries herself that way, then that’s going to get my attention….But let’s be realistic about it too: If someone tells you that you are the complete package, but you’ve never had a date and no one has ever been interested in you (and you have no friend requests), then reevaluate the situation. There is a difference between confidence and stupidity. Don’t allow someone to hype you up and give you false confidence. Be able to back up whatever you are claiming or believe about yourself. You know what you look like and who you are, so be realistic with your expectations.

5.      Knowing and being a part of the athletic world, why do you think that some women allow themselves to become groupies? What do you think that they are actually chasing after? They are chasing after the American dream. They know that if they can sleep with this dude and have his baby then they are probably going to be set for life…. Or that if they get recognized by being with him and experience some level of fame and recognition from that experience, that they can possibly get TV shows or endorsements as a result of that. For them it’s all about fame and money; the limelight.

Some of these women will go out and buy their best outfits (sometimes that they can’t even afford), and purchase the most expensive accessories (that they purchased on a payment plan), just to get their one chance.

Let’s back up a second…can you explain what a groupie is for anybody reading this who doesn’t know?
A groupie is a person who associates with a certain group of people because of their status and the potential benefits and recognition that it may bring her. She knows her role and she realizes that her name is a group…a collection. She doesn’t care that she doesn’t have a commitment from this guy or that he is dating several different people while simultaneously talking to her because she just wants her needs to be met. She doesn’t get jealous because she has no ownership; you can’t get jealous over a rented entity because it was never yours to begin with. Usually groupies have low self-esteem, so they allow this type of behavior because they either don’t realize their worth or they don’t care.

6.      Do you think that there is a difference between a gold digger and a woman who just wants security? Yes. A woman who wants security wants to know that everything is going to be ok if something were to ever happen. She wants to feel assured and protected. A gold digger wants everything, and basically isn’t going to stop until you are broke. She will never be satisfied because she is always going to want more. She is digging for or desiring the gold in everything. She wants all of her shoes to be Jimmy Choos or red bottoms, she wants several houses in different states (or countries), and she wants the most expensive cars…she always wants. A woman who wants security will be ok with silver or bronze…she desires nice things, but her most important objective is just having her needs met and to know that she is being taken care of. All of that extra stuff is just a bonus not a necessity.

7.       Do you think that some men deserve more leniency when it comes to their behavior more so than other guys, depending on who they are or how they were raised? No and yes. Many people see famous people and they see the perceptions surrounding them, and because they are famous they have higher expectations of them. What they fail to realize is that when a regular person goes out the media and the news aren’t watching them, but as soon as an athlete uses the bathroom or eats at a restaurant they are having their pictures taken. So because they are placed under the limelight and have so much pressure placed on them, I do believe that they should be allowed some leniencies because everything that they do is magnified. Whether they want to be or not they are an open book to society, whereas the average person has privacy and doesn’t have every mistake that he has committed being broadcasted everywhere.

8.      Why do you think some guys won’t settle down? They are in their late 20s and 30s and have children, but won’t commit to a woman. Why is she good enough to continue sleeping with, but not good enough to marry? That’s a great question. I hate to say this, but a lot of times those children probably aren’t planned. There is probably something in the woman or something in himself that makes him hesitant or skeptical to commit to. Some people always wonder if they can do better, and they know that marriage is the ultimate commitment, so he probably isn’t ready to settle down until he has found someone that he can see himself spending the rest of his life with.

Maybe he feels as though she is good enough to continue sleeping with and having a good time with, but not good enough to make a commitment to or spend the rest of his life with her. That said, some women keep having those children because they feel like they can use it as leverage, but for the guy who thinks like this that will never be a good reason for him to stay with you. In his head he can still be a great father without being with you, so please don’t try to have a child with someone in hopes that he will stay with you because that might not happen.

Look at the guy you are dealing with. Some guys just won’t commit. Some men have a fear of commitment. And to be honest he probably realizes that he doesn’t have to. If he knows that he can get the benefits of being married without making the commitment, then why not just lease it and return it when he’s done. (Sorry to sound so drastic or to associate women with objects, but I’m just trying to provide a visual). When he is married though, he knows that he can’t just get out of it that easy.

If women raised their standards and drew a clear line in the sand, then those guys would alter their ways. So to answer your question, a lot of it is fear of commitment on the mens behalf but for women it is that they allow it by not setting clear expectations for what they want and what they are looking for.

9.      What’s your opinion about living with someone before marrying them? I was torn on this subject until I did it, but now that I have experienced it and I know better, I think that it is wrong. Not only do you have nothing to look forward to when you get married, but it’s just like it won’t get any better than that. Once you win the Super Bowl, what else can you win? When you are at the top of Mount Everest, where else can you go? If you are living with her and you aren’t married to her, you have already won your prize and there is nothing left to look forward to. You might even start feeling like ‘why should I give you a ring now when we have already done everything?’... I wouldn’t recommend it.

Some people argue that you want to test drive a car before you buy it, but you know what a Mercedes, Bentley, or an Audi is before you purchase them. Before you even get into the car you know that it is going to be a superior car because they have high standards in making them. You don’t really have to test it out because the name and the standards speak for themselves. If you saw a good deal on a flat screen that you have been wanting for years, you are going to buy it without question, and then you are going to read the instruction manual on how to make it the best that it can be and to learn how to get the optimal usage out of it.

10.   What qualities do you suggest are good marriage material attributes in a man?
·         Trust- it’s the foundation of the relationship. If you don’t have a strong foundation then you can easily be wiped away when a storm comes.

·         Someone that you are attracted to- you don’t want to be like roommates (and I’m not just talking about physically but socially, mentally, and emotionally as well); you want to like the person that you are with.

·         Protection- A woman doesn’t want to be with a man who can’t protect her. If there is a fire she wants to know that he will help her out of a burning building; not that he is going to knock her over trying to run out first.

·         Provision- not as a gold digger but as a provider. She wants to know that if something happens that she can feel secure. Someone who is resourceful, and even if he can’t cook, he can go buy something. Even though they are depending on each other, she wants to know that she can rest assured in who he is as her husband if something were to happen.

·         Friendship- You want to like the person before you love them. In a marriage you have to be with that person for the rest of your life, and since you are going to see them everyday you may want to make sure that it is somebody that you like and enjoy his company.

11.   What would a dream date be like with you? Every date that we go on is going to be special because we will be spending time with each other. I love food, so I would say that a dream date is having a prominent chef cooking a meal just for the two of us, while Boyz II Men, (have to keep it old school), serenades us. (It’s the winter and they are singing Let It Snow). On the menu are all of her favorite foods, followed by a nice dessert. After that, I would say my goodbyes and go home because I would want to keep her guessing. If it was amazing this time, then the next time I would want to top that.

Guys don’t have dream dates though, so it’s all about the female. You want to give her something to talk about, but don’t give her everything. You want to continue dating her for the rest of your life.

12.   What is the nicest thing that a girl has ever done for you? The nicest thing that a girl has ever done for me was help me pass college, but since we aren’t talking about you…you also took a whooping for me once… and told that I swallowed a quarter when I was smaller and helped me get me medical attention… you made me a bell and stood by my side when I broke my leg; making sure that I had everything that I needed… Or mom taking me to the candy store when I was a kid, or buying me that pool table that I received for Christmas when I didn’t expect it.…I am surrounded by great women so it’s hard to decide.

Ok, but outside of my sister, mom, aunts, and grandma, the nicest thing that a girl has ever done for me is when I got my wisdom tooth pulled and she stood right there by me. She also had her mom cook my favorite meal on my birthday and they drove all the way to my place to bring it to me (even though we don’t live close to each other). It may seem small, but it’s those thoughtful acts that really mean a lot to me.

13.   Mom always told ya’ll (my brothers) to treat the girl that you date like you would want someone to treat your sister. As your sister, what standards are you expecting for the guy that becomes my husband?
This is a great question. Since I only have one sister, I’m going to be more protective of you because not only do I know guys, but I know how much you are worth. It’s not what I have heard about you from other people, but I know the real you, so I know how much you deserve and I know the type of guy that is deserving of you. Because of this I would hold my standards of him extremely high. You always want the best for your family members and since you are my best friend, I only want the finest for you because you deserve that and so much more.

When you do get into a relationship and ultimately get married, I will offer you my opinion but the final decision is yours. I would however like to spend some quality time with him before that happens because I want to see what you see in him that you haven’t seen in anybody else. Many guys are wolves in sheep’s clothing, but I have clippers so I will be able to handle it. People are what they are, so his true colors are eventually going to come out anyway. But I want to understand who you are dealing with because I care about you.

And finally, he can’t come between us. Our family has been there for each other through a lot and we all mean the world to one another, and our significant others should add to that dynamic and not hinder it. Once you get married there are going to boundaries and some things will change, but there are some things that you can’t replace. I can’t ever replace you no matter who I marry and I hope it’s the same for you. You are my sister and my best friend. I love you.

****V.M. Says: You are trying to make me tear up with that one; thank you for caring about me so much and for always being there for me. I love you too J***

14.   Any advice for young women who are trying to figure this relationship thing out? How do you figure out the square root of pie? The Bible says that a man who finds a wife finds a good thing. A woman should wait to be found. In the earth, many of the things that are worth the most value are those that have to be found: diamonds, gold, oil, etc. Just keep doing the right things and take care of yourself and you will be found. Hard work doesn’t go unnoticed. A real man is going to be looking for you. Don’t get discouraged, and always be presentable and treat people right because you never know who you will meet or where you will meet him. Keep a positive attitude.

15.   What’s your final piece of advice?
I have seen a lot of women and I know the type of women that my mom and sister are, and although the bad girls or the dangerous girls seem fun and intriguing, I have learned not to be enticed or tricked by that. I learned to set my standards and my expectations of what I want in a woman and to not settle for anything less than that. If you want a diamond, don’t go buy cubic zirconia, wait until you get the diamond. I was raised by three incredible women who I wouldn’t trade the world for, so I know that those diamonds are out there…They are worth waiting for.
